Drop-off and Pick Up Procedures

The Horizons staff has developed these procedures to help ensure the safety of our children during the morning pick up and afternoon drop off. Since the majority of our students arrive by car, the parking lot and streets adjacent to the school grounds can become congested. Please review these procedures so everyone can have an efficient, safe pick-up and drop-off experience.

Morning Drop-Off

• Drop off students in front of the building or on Sioux Drive in front of the school. For safety and security, Horizons students and adults enter through the main doors from the parking lot. Middle School students are permitted to enter their classroom from the outside door, if a teacher is present.
• Drop off children from the Drop-Off Lane only. Do not let children out of the car from the Drive-Thru Lane.
• Children should exit from the right side of the car.
• Never leave your car unattended in either the Drop-Off area in front of the school or on Sioux Drive or in the Horizons Drive-Thru Lane.
• If you must leave your car, please use the Diagonal Parking Area or park on the south side of Sioux or on Mohawk Drive. The city has put up "drop-off and pick-up only" signs on the north side of Sioux, in front of the school and police will ticket cars left unattended.
• The doors open at 7:55 AM and elementary students need to wait outside until then if they are dropped off earlier. Middle school students may enter their classrooms through the outside door if the teacher is there. Instruction for middle school students begins at 8:00, and at 8:05 for elementary students.

Afternoon Pick Up

• All students will exit from the doors facing Sioux Drive or the door on the west side of the building, facing Mohawk Drive. Elementary students will all stay on the sidewalk area next to the Pick-Up and Drop-Off Lane until their rides arrive. Middle school students can wait on the sidewalk area or in the grassy area on the southwest corner of the school grounds (see map). Their behavior, while waiting, is expected to be appropriate.
• Elementary students are dismissed at 3:10, middle school students at 3:15, Monday through Thursday. Dismissal is12:05 for elementary students and 12:15 for middle school students on Friday. Please line cars up in the Drop-Off Lane, along the school sidewalk, beginning at Sioux Drive. Children should enter their cars from the sidewalk only.
• After your children are seated in your car, pull out into the Drive-Thru Lane and carefully exit.
• As cars ahead of you leave, move your car forward in the Drop-Off Lane. Please keep the Drive-Thru Lane moving at all times. If you park on Mohawk Drive, please park on the east side of the road, adjacent to the school grounds. This will help to minimize the number of children crossing a street to get to their cars.
• Use the crosswalks in front of the school when walking children to their cars; do not cross into either the Drop-Off or Drive-Thru Lanes. Walk your child along the school sidewalk to the parking areas. Students needing to cross Sioux or Mohawk Drives should proceed to the intersection and cross at the crosswalk.
• There are no stop signs or crossing guards on Mohawk at the intersection with Sioux, so students and drivers need to be especially careful to stop and look both ways before crossing. Please remain patient. Patience will ensure the safety of everyone!
• Elementary students who are not picked up by 3:25 (M-TH) or 12:25 (F) will be taken to the after-school program; cost for this program is $8/hr.
