Lunch
The Lunch Period
Middle School 11:10-11:40 (M-Th)
Elementary 12:05-12:45 (M-Th)
Individual Lunches
All students are expected to provide their own lunches, unless they
have ordered a Wednesday hot lunch through The Huckleberry. The
school does not have an operating kitchen or participate in the
Boulder Valley School Districts lunch program.
Picnic Lunch
Horizons students enjoy a picnic environment eating outdoors on
the playground when the weather permits. Students are responsible
for composting, recycling, and throwing away their trash appropriately
before they begin to play. After eating, students play in designated
areas and may use the playground equipment.
Inside Lunch
When the weather is inclement, elementary students eat lunch on
tables set up in the gym. (Middle School students may eat their
lunch in the gym or remain in the classroom if the teacher is present.)
Students have assigned tables. Table assignments are made several
times during the year and students choose where they would like
to sit at that time. Middle-school students do not have assigned
seats, but their tables are in a designated area. Students are expected
to use appropriate table manners, to respect the rights of others
in behavior and conversation, and to follow the directions of the
lunchroom supervisors.
Clean Up
Students are responsible for throwing away their trash and cleaning
their places at the table with a sponge and water. Students with
recyclable containers should put those items in appropriate bins.
Elementary students wait and raise their hand at the table until
their area is checked by a lunchroom supervisor. Students line up
at the door and wait until a playground supervisor takes them outside.
Lunch Recess
Students are to stay in the lunchroom (gym) or lunch area (outside)
for at least fifteen minutes before they begin recess activities.
This encourages students to finish their lunches and eat more slowly.
Middle school students may begin recess at 11:25; elementary students
may begin recess at 12:20.
If the weather is too inclement, students are asked to bring a
quiet activity to the lunchroom for their recess time; on bad weather
days, elementary students are expected to remain in the gym during
the entire lunch period. Middle school students may spend the recess
time in classrooms where a teacher is present. Students are to remain
on the playground or in the gym until 11:40 (middle school) or 12:45
(elementary), unless they request a pass to use the restroom or
to enter the building for another specific reason.
Clothing
Students are expected to go out for recess even in cold weather,
except when the weather is severe. They are asked to bring appropriate
outdoor clothing to the lunchroom.
